Giants' Dig!

Three dim-witted giants are in need of your assistance in digging for jewels.
The instructions for all three versions of the game are listed below. Before starting Version P, make sure to enable JavaScript on your Web browser. Version J-P is part of the Login Feature and requires that you log in to play.

The goal of Giants' Dig is to score as many points as possible before you get Game Over. You can win, but don't count on it. In Version J-P, you only get a limited number of plays, but your score in each game is added to a total score.

In Versions J and J-P, you can select different mode combinations by clicking on the mode buttons. In Version J, you may select a different mode combination for each play. In Version J-P, however, while you can select a different mode combination for each group of plays, once you select a mode combination for the first play in a group, you must use that mode combination for the rest of the plays in that group. When you are out of plays in Version J-P, don't forget to Yottaafy your score.

Certain special modes may be available for Version J and/or Version J-P during holiday seasons or other special times. To use the special mode(s), click on the "Special Mode 1 On/Off" or "Special Mode 2 On/Off" buttons. In Version J-P, you might get something special for scoring highly on one of these modes! The names of Special Modes 1 and 2 are found on the appropriate Version's webpage.

The game starts with a medium-sized patch of dirt to dig, called a "grid". (The grid is bigger to start in higher difficulty levels.) As you progress in the game, the grid becomes bigger. Click anywhere in the grid to dig in the Dig Dirt there (double-click in Version P). You can find a number of interesting things under the Dig Dirt, all of which are randomly placed in the grid. These are listed below:

This is a ruby. Rubies are needed to 'reverse' the warp. (See below.) You do not keep rubies, so they do not add to your score.
This is an emerald. Unlike rubies, you keep emeralds, so they increase your score. However, you must clear the grid you find the emeralds in, or they will be lost! There are other ways to add to your score, which vary depending on the mode(s) selected.
This is a diamond. (Available in Diamond Mode only.) There is only 1 diamond in each grid. If you dig up the diamond and make it to the next grid, then the warp will be visible in that grid! (A star can be found next to the warp when it is visible, but not active. See below. In Version P, you must hover your mouse over the space where the warp is. Diamond Mode in Version P is not supported in Internet Explorer.)
This is the warp. When the warp is dug up, it is activated automatically. Normally, the warp is set to return you to the previous grid. (If you are on the first grid, it's Game Over!) However, if you have collected enough rubies in the current grid, the warp reverses and advances you to the next grid. (If you are on the final grid, you win!)
If you dig up a miniature black hole like this one, you get pulled into it and are automatically returned to the first grid! (If you are on the first grid already, it's Game Over!)
This is a sapphire. (Available in Sapphire Mode only.) There is only 1 sapphire in each grid. If you dig up the sapphire and make it to the next grid, your score will get a big boost! However, dig up a black hole while you have the sapphire and it's an automatic Game Over! (Sapphire Mode is not available in Version P.)
You could also find nothing under the Dig Dirt, which would look like this:

(Don't forget, the goal of Giants' Dig is to get as high a score as you can, NOT to win! Winning this game is nearly impossible!)
